Many people who may not be religious know of or have heard of some of the 12 Apostles. We know the name Judas, Mark, and John. But what do you really know about the original 12 Apostles? In the book of Mark in the New Testament when can see mention of the 12 Apostles by name. The 12 were referred to as a group who were on a mission of preaching and healing at the request of Jesus. These 12 were privileged to be in the continual company of Jesus, learn his teachings and spread his word. The original 12 Apostles named in the Bible were: Peter, James, John, Zebedee, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananaean (or Zealot), and Judas Iscariot.Â
There was a special importance to the number 12 in determining the Apostles. It is believed that the number 12 is a reference to the original 12 tribes of ancient Israel. That number dropped to 11 after the defection, betrayal, and death of the traitor, Judas Iscariot. An election was held to bring in a new Apostle to bring the number back to 12.
