We all know how to eat healthily, don't we? You're supposed to have 1,800 to 2,000 calories a day if you're a woman, and 2,000 to 2,500 if you're a man. You should eat plenty of roughage and vitamins and minerals, and make sure you get five servings of fruits and vegetables a day at minimum. 

You should limit your protein intake to lean, healthy meats and good sources of protein like nuts, certain vegetables, and white meat. Processed sugar and saturated fat should be kept to a minimum, and alcohol intake should be no more than 14 units a week maximum, which means one pint of beer or two small glasses of wine per day. You shouldn't deep-fry... well, anything.

All that is easier said than done. It's not just that many of us are time-poor or live in a food desert. It's also that the ingredients a healthy diet involves tend to be more perishable and require more expertise to make them delicious. This is why, with the best of intentions, most of us come up short in at least a few areas - and we know we might be shaving years off our lives, but we can't always worry about that right this minute. 

Still, perhaps it's time to take stock and see just how many years - and even more importantly, how many healthy years - we're really risking?
