If not for the work of Bram Stoker the world may never have fallen in love with the idea of vampires. Stoker didn't invent them when he wrote "Dracula" back in 1897, but he recreated them. He turned what had been a ghoulish fiend of nightmares into something that was terrifying but also sympathetic. Dracula was powerful but also lost. He was evil but somehow alluring and seductive. He set the framework for over 100 years of vampire fiction that had made these creatures of the night into some of the most sensual and romantic beings in all of fiction. But at the same time, they're some of the most fiendish and horrifying. Few other creatures can straddle that line as well as the vampire. They really are amazing beings.
