I regularly bulk-order car fresheners for my best friend's car. So you can hardly tell how unclean it is.

I work with plants, so the soil embedded in my fingernails is a sign of a lucky green thumb, not filth.
My fingernails are as clean as the money I count up to give them. So they'd probably say they're rather clean.
They probably noticed how dirty they are from all the handiwork I do.
That'd be a pretty shallow thing to notice and make a mental note of, especially concerning a friend.
