About This Quiz

Think you know everything there is to know about the iconic television show, "Cheers"? Take this quiz to find out.

For eleven seasons and 275 episodes, we watched as Sam, Diane, Norm, Coach, Carla and Cliff gathered at their favorite watering hole to relax and chat. But this hugely popular show almost never became the success it was. "Cheers" first aired in 1982 and was near the bottom of the pile of the season's television offerings. Clearly the show was an acquired taste, and thank goodness viewers acquired a taste for it. After all, what would television history be without "Cheers"? Numerous sources now rank the show as one of the best of all time.

"Cheers" spawned two spin-off shows: "Frasier," which was very successful, and "The Tortellis," which was cancelled after only 13 episodes. "Frasier" featured Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane, a psychiatrist and former love interest of Diane's who eventually married, then divorced, Lilith Sternin, also a psychiatrist. However, "Cheers" itself was primarily about the bartender and Cheers owner, Sam, and his love interest, waitress Diane (until the final seasons).

So, if you know that Sam was a former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox  known as Mayday Malone, that the show's theme song was "Where Everybody Knows Your Name," and that Carla Tortelli was a mother of eight, this quiz is for you.

Let's get started.

Which actor played the character Sam Malone?

During the show's 11-year run, Danson was nominated nine times for an Emmy Award as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and won twice, in 1990 and 1993.

What is the name of Norm's wife?

While her voice is often heard at the other end of the phone, Vera's face is never seen by the audience, although she does make two appearances on the show: once her face is covered in a thrown pie, and the other time only her legs are visible.

Which actor played the character Cliff Claven?

Cliff wasn't in the original script. John Ratzenberger auditioned for the part of Norm and wasn't thought suitable. He then asked the writers if they had a "bar know-it-all" and quickly improvised a character. This impressed the producers to the point that they created the part of Cliff Clavin for him.

Which of the following actors did NOT appear in every Cheers episode?

Kirstie Alley won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series" in 1991 for her work as Rebecca Howe.

What was the Cheers spin-off show called?

Between Cheers and the spin-off Frasier, Kelsey Grammer played the character of Frasier Crane for 20 consecutive years. Cheers spun off one other series, The Tortellis, in 1987. The series focused on Carla's ex-husband Nick, and aired for 13 episodes. While the sitcom Wings was created and produced by Cheers writers, and characters crossed over between the two shows, it is considered more of a companion show and in no way a spin-off of Cheers.

How does Dr. Crane get introduced to the Cheers bar?

After Diane returned to working at the bar, she dated Frasier for a while. In later episodes she admits that she strung him along.

He was eventually called up to the Major Leagues, where he spent his entire six-year career with the Boston Red Sox, and had been retired for five years when Cheers began.

Which actress played the character Diane Chambers?

Shelley Long never intended to stay with the show beyond her initial contract. Long had only reluctantly agreed to co-star in the series as she was more interested in a career as a film actress rather than one for television.

Who was a contestant on Jeopardy! but lost all his/her money after betting it all in the Final Jeopardy round?

The question Cliff lost it all on was, "Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?" Cliff was winning by enough that, had he made a small wager, he would have been guaranteed a win. Alex Trebek has jokingly referred to this situation (making a risky Final Jeopardy bet with a dominating lead) several times in the actual show as "pulling a Cliff Clavin."

Why did Diane end up leaving Boston?

What year was Cheers first broadcast?

After premiering on September 30, 1982, Cheers was nearly canceled. It ranked last in ratings for its premiere (77th out of 77 shows). Cheers, however, eventually became a highly rated television show in the United States, earning a top-ten rating during 8 of its 11 seasons, including one season at #1.

Who was Harry the Hat?

Better known as Harry The Hat for his signature fedora, Harry Gittes is a con artist and frequent jailbird. He often tries to swindle Cheers's customers and employees with various cons. As Harry said, "I don't like the idea of someone else plucking my pigeons."

For how many seasons did Cheers run?

Cheers ran for 11 seasons between 1982 and 1993. The show was created by the team of James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles.

While Frasier initially finds Lilith difficult, what physical aspect is he unable to resist?

As a ploy, Diane asks Lilith for a hairpin as she claims the fridge door is stuck. Frasier knows it's a ploy and refuses to react "like Pavlov's dog" but when Lilith's hair is down, he can't control himself and says, " "I'm going to kiss you. I'm going to kiss you hard, and I'm going to kiss you long, but make no mistake about it, I am going to kiss you. In fact, I'm going to kiss you like you've never-" yet his lengthy verbal foreplay is soon interrupted by Lilith. On impulse, she launches herself at him and the two psychiatrists share their first longing, impassioned, albeit short kiss.

What is the address of the fictional "Cheers" bar?

If that fractional address were real, it would be in the middle of a row of brownstone townhouses. Beacon Street itself runs from the center of Boston some ten miles to I-95 at Newton Lower Falls.

What led to the decision to cancel Cheers at the end of the 1992-1993 season?

It's said that after Ted Danson announced that he was leaving the series, NBC wanted to continue the series by having Woody take over the bar but Woody Harrelson refused to continue the series without Danson.

How does Woody join the gang at Cheers?

Woody arrived at Cheers expecting to meet his "penpal" Coach (with whom he exchanged pens, instead of letters). Upon learning of his death, he filled the open bartender position and was quickly accepted by the staff and regulars, developing a "big brother/little brother" relationship with Sam.

What was Frederick Crane's, son of Frasier and Lilith, first word?

Frederick's first word was "Norm", which he says just as Norm Peterson enters the bar (which is what all the bar patrons say when he enters the bar).

What happens in the episode "The Heart is a Lonely Snipe Hunter?"

When Frasier is bored with his work, Diane encourages the guys (including Sam) to invite him to their "guys only" weekend. Because he is dull they abandon him, leaving him snipe hunting alone. He returns, apparently happy to be part of the gang (which worries Diane). However, he tells her he knew the game was fabricated and plans to retaliate.

What is the name of the series pilot episode?

Diane is left behind in the Cheers bar by her fiance, and then owner/bartender Sam offers Diane a job as a waitress, which she initially refuses, but reluctantly accepts when she finds she can repeat verbatim a lengthy order from one table.

In the episode "Thanksgiving Orphans," where does the Cheers gang head to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner?

Though Cheers was always an ensemble sitcom, in season 5 it became extremely involved in the Sam-and-Diane romance. In this episode each character got their chance in the spotlight, as well as a chance to play up some screwball comedy in the climactic food fight.

What nickname does the gang use for character Ernie Pantusso?

He claimed his other nickname was "Red", not because he had red hair, but because he had read a book. Quotes like this were characteristic of our dear Coach.

Which of the following is NOT something that happened at Woody and Kelly's disastrous wedding?

Diane has been dating Sam's brother, Derek, and driving Sam crazy with jealousy. She confesses to Coach that she is torn between her ideal mate Derek, who is committed to her, and her "bubblegum" Sam. They finally argue, admit their feelings for each other, and kiss!

What is the name of the borderline psychopath that Diane dated once after Sam set them up?

Derek McGrath plays Andy Schroeder, who returns to Cheers intending to commit an armed robbery. Sam grabs Andy's unloaded gun, and Carla restrains him. Diane convinces her colleagues not to turn Andy in to the police, and decides to try to reform him. Andy becomes infatuated with Diane and becomes jealous when he sees her kissing Sam. During a live performance of Othello, Andy wrings Diane's neck. Sam thinks that this is part of the play until Andy explains that he saw Sam and Diane kissing. Sam rescues Diane while Norm and Cliff restrain Andy, who yells out "Mommy!"

What is the name of Carla's ex-husband's ditzy blonde trophy second wife?

Loretta's dream, before she married Nick, was to become a singer; she once described herself as a "taller, blonder, less Mormon Marie Osmond." Loretta, appreciative of Diane's kindness, told Nick, "I really like that Debbie."

What is Norm's first name?

In the episode "It's a Wonderful Wife," Vera tells Rebecca off-camera that Norm's real first name is Hillary. Cliff asks if his grandfather really killed a man for laughing at his first name and Norm replies, "Not exactly. He was a surgeon and he sort of botched an operation."

What is the name of the first episode without Shelley Long as Diane?

After Sam and Diane break up, Sam sells Cheers to the Lillian Corporation and leaves Boston on his new yacht. Six months later, the yacht sinks and he returns to Cheers where he finds changes; employees must wear uniforms, Carla is pregnant with Eddie's child, the bartender is Wayne, and Rebecca Howe is the bar owner and manager.

In season 1, "Truce or Consequences" puts a spotlight on the relationship between which two characters?

Sam warns Carla and Diane about losing their jobs and orders them to patch things up. After Sam leaves the bar, Carla confesses to Diane that Gino, one of her children, is Sam's child, and commands Diane to keep this a secret. The next day, Diane inadvertently reveals Carla's secret to Coach. When Coach tells her that Sam and Carla have only known each other for five years and Gino is seven and a half, Carla's confession is shown to be a lie. When another conflict between the two waitresses ensues, Sam drags them into the office to settle the matter. When they tell Sam the whole situation, and Carla shows a picture of Gino, they all burst into laughter. Carla and Diane make up with a handshake.
