Think you know your global capitals? There are 195 countries on earth today. Each has a capital, and some even have more than one for different reasons. Some capitals have stood for centuries and others were planned and built decades ago or less. Many house governments and are centers of culture, commerce, finance, history, cuisine, entertainment, the arts and even more. The capitals which can be found spanning the entire globe are as diverse, interesting and complex as the countries they are within.   

True global citizens can find their home in any corner of the world, whether it's east, west, north or south. In fact, many of the world's biggest capital cities have many similarities when it comes to their layouts and the companies with stores there. Certain chains can be found throughout the world. Whether it's Hong Kong, London, New York City, Berlin or Canberra, the languages, fashion and architecture might vary, but people have more in common than you might think. So do their cities.

Mexico City is the most populous city in North America, with more than 21 million people living in its metropolitan area. It is the largest metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere.


United States

This capital is named for the first president of the United States, George Washington. It is one of the most popular tourist stops in the world, with more than 20 million visitors a year.



New Dehli is the capital and center of government of India. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and one of the most populous.



Paris has been a major center of European finance, science, fashion, commerce and the arts since the 1600s. It is a major transportation hub known for its museums and food.



The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populated metropolitan area on earth. It is widely considered to be one of the best cities to live, work and study.



Brasilia is a planned city that was founded in 1960. It is known for its modernist architecture and unique urban planning.



Moscow is one of the world's largest cities and the largest one on the European continent. It is the northernmost and coldest metropolis on earth.



Cairo is the most populous city in the Middle East and the Arab world. It's famously close to the Giza pyramid complex.


The Netherlands

While the Dutch constitution refers to Amsterdam as the capital, it is not where the government and monarch are located. They can be found in the Hague.



With over 2 million residents, Havana is the largest city in the Caribbean. This city was founded by the Spanish in the 1500s.



Berlin is the EU's second most populous city proper after London. People from more than 180 nations live in the metropolitan area surrounding it.



Rome is the capital of Italy and 4th most populous city in the EU. Within its limits exists Vatican City, making it the only city on earth to have a country within its limits.



Canberra is Australia's 8th largest city. It was designated the country's capital in 1908 as a compromise between Australia's largest cities, rivals Sydney and Melbourne.



Dublin is the capital and largest city of Ireland. It is located on the country' s east coast.


Sierra Leone

Freetown is a large harbor city known for its diversity. It is the oldest city to be founded by African-American ex-slaves.



Jakarta is the capital and largest city in Indonesia. The Greater Jakarta Metropolitan area is the second largest on earth after Tokyo, with a population of roughly 30 million people.


United Kingdom

London is the capital and most populated city of both England and the United Kingdom. It is the world's largest financial center and has been an important settlement for about 2,000 years.



Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. It is the third largest city in the EU after London and Berlin.


The Philippines

Manila has one of the most densely populated city propers on earth. It is also one of the wealthiest areas in Southeast Asia.


New Zealand

Wellington is the world southernmost capital city. It is known as the world's windiest city.



Oslo is known for its high quality of living and also for being one of the most expensive cities to live in on earth. About 25% of its less than a million-person urban area population are immigrants.


South Africa

South Africa is unique in that it has 3 capitals. Pretoria is the executive capital, Bloemfontein is the judicial capital, and Cape Town is the legislative capital.



Reykjavik is the world's northernmost capital of a sovereign state. It is the largest city in Iceland, with a population of over 200,000 in and surrounding it.


South Korea

Seoul is the capital and largest city in South Korea, home to about half of the country's citizens. It is one of the most expensive cities in the world and considered one of Asia's most livable cities.



Bolivia has two capitals, Sucre and La Paz. At nearly 12,000 ft above sea level in the Andes, La Paz is the highest capital city on earth.



Taipei is officially known as Taipei City. Over 7 million people live in its metropolitan area, making it one of the most populated metropolitan areas in the world.



Tashkent is the most populous city in Central Asia and home to over 2 million people. It is a diverse city due to the Soviet Union deporting people from all over Eurasia there during Soviet rule.



Tehran is home to over 8 million people within its city limits. It is the most populous city in Western Asia and second in the Middle East.



Bangkok is the capital and largest city of Thailand, with more than 14 million people living in the city's metropolitan area. In Thai, the city is called Krung Thep.



Kathmandu sits at a high elevation and is the gateway to the Nepalese Himalayas. It is the largest city in Nepal, with a population of 1.5 million in the city proper.



Ulaanbaatar means "Red Hero." Over a million people, about half of Mongolia's entire population, live there.



Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Its recorded history spans over 3,000 years, making it one of the world's oldest cities.



Islamabad has a population of about 2 million. It is home to the Faisal Mosque, the largest mosque in South Asia.


North Korea

Pyongyang is the capital and largest city of North Korea. It is also the country's industrial center.



Quito, located in the Andes at over 9,000 ft above sea level, is one of the highest capital cities on earth. The city has one of the best preserved historic centers in the Americas.
