Bob Crane portrays Colonel Robert E. Hogan, United States Army Air Forces, senior ranking POW officer and leader of the group. According to this character’s backstory, he commanded the 504th Bombardment Group. He was shot down while on a raid on Hamburg in an operation masterminded by Luftwaffe Colonel Biedenbender, who studied Hogan's tactics in order to defeat him and was promoted to general for doing so. After Hogan's Heroes ended, Crane's career declined. He became frustrated with the few roles he was being offered and began doing dinner theater. Crane was found bludgeoned to death in his Scottsdale apartment, a murder that remains officially unsolved
