Thought to be lost forever, the wreck of the Titanic was discovered by Rob Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel in 1985. Sitting at a depth of around 3.8 kilometers (almost 2.4 miles) on the surface of the ocean, the wreck is in two large pieces, the bow and the stern. Much of the bow is still intact, but the stern is completely destroyed.
