You have to be ready for anything to happen at any time. To be a military general, you have to be cool under pressure, and an incredible leader that can gain the trust of the people beneath you, so much so that they will follow what you say without any doubt. You also have to be able to own your mistakes and productively deal with defeat.

You have to be charming enough to get along with both your friends and your enemies, yet intimidating enough to strike fear into opponents at a time of war. You need to be smart enough to know when to be conservative and when to be imaginative. You need to know when to attack, and when it is time to retreat, at least for now.
