About This Quiz

Were you a shoo-in for the annual spelling bee in school? Do you still pride yourself on being able to spell even the most difficult words? If you think you can hang with the national spelling champs, take this quiz!

Let's begin with the misspelling of the word misspell. Did you know that misspell is often misspelled? If you didn't, you might be in trouble. Too many people spell misspell with only one "s," as in "mispell," when the word actually has two "s"s. Double letters can cause a great deal of confusion among writers, so if you can never remember how many "s"s and "p"s are in Mississippi, then you're not alone!

Another reason words are often misspelled is because of silent letters, as in the word "pneumonia." We certainly don't pronounce the "p," now do we? And why on Earth is the word "knight" spelled with a "k?" At least you can't confuse it with "night" which seems to have an extraneous "g" floating in there.

Whew! If we haven't completely confused you, take this quiz to find out how many of the commonly misspelled words you can identify!

Find the incorrectly spelled word: "He wanted to live on a Carribean island."

The word "Carribean" is spelled incorrectly. Use two "b"s, not two "r"s to spell the name of this region correctly: Caribbean.

Find the incorrectly spelled word: "The jury voted to indite him for the crime."

"Indite" is spelled incorrectly. The correct spelling is "indict." This is a case of a word with a silent letter that you simply have to memorize.

Find the incorrectly spelled word: "The party was a welcome to the new millenium."

The word "millenium" is spelled incorrectly. The word is spelled with two "l"s and two "n"s: millennium. The same rule goes for the word, "millennial."

We know. This is a tough word! "Rhythym" is incorrect. The correct way to spell this consonant-heavy word is "rhythm."

The word "harrass" is spelled incorrectly. The correct spelling is "harass." Remember, there's only one "r" in the word.

This is a classic case of "i" before "e" except after "c" or when sounding like "a" as in "neighbor" or "weigh." The proper spelling of this word is "achieve."

Although it might sound like "Au-stray-lee-uh," it's correctly spelled "Australia," not "Austrailia."
