In 1920, the first superhero film ever hit the movie theaters. It was a silent film, "The Mark of Zorro". By 1949, the first TV superhero entered living rooms across the country, as "The Lone Ranger" and his friend Tonto wandered the Wild West dueling it up with the bad guys. Since then, there have been thousands of new movies and TV shows to entertain millions of people across the world. While the genre of superheroes never faded or died, there has been a mass resurgence in popularity. 

How well do you know your superheroes - or more specifically, how well do you know the actors who play your favorite superheroes? Did Gal Gadot ever play Supergirl? Who was the dad-next-door guy who played Ant-Man? Who played the mighty, hammer-wielding Norse God of Thunder, Thor? From the well-known actors who donned the persona of the Caped Crusader, to the indefatigable Ironman, to the indestructible Superman, and a few lesser-known superheroes able to attract big-name actors into their spandex outfits, all sorts of actors have soared across out screens as superheroes.

Jason Momoa made his first appearance as Aquaman in DC's "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice" in 2016. Followed by a second appearance in "Justice League" (2017), he will reprise the role in the solo film, "Aquaman," to be released in 2018 giving an in-depth look into Aquaman's story.

A versatile actor who played a lover-boy role in the romantic comedy, "The Proposal," Ryan Reynolds took on the active role of DC comic superhero Green Lantern in 2011. Not as successful as Warner Bros would have hoped it would be, the film was criticised for lacking a detailed story and for poor acting.

Born Nicolas Capello, Nicolas Cage is known for his usual eccentric roles; his role in 2007's "Ghost Rider" was no different. The movie based on Marvels' comic, despite its poor reviews by critics, raked in higher than budgeted figures when released.

Well known for his role as Wolverine in Marvel's "X-men," Hugh Jackman is an Australian born actor. Jackman's friend, Russell Crowe, recommended him personally to director Bryan Singer after Crowe turned down the lead role in "X-men."

Making her first appearance as Batgirl in the 1997 "Batman and Robin" film as Batman's second sidekick, Alicia Silverstone was heavily criticised for her role as the Batgirl. Being only 21 at the time, the actress was quite new to the acting industry.

A very excited British actor landed the role of Dr. Strange after beating many other actors to it. At first, critics questioned whether Benedict Cumberbatch was "a big enough name" in Hollywood to star in a Marvel film. Cumberbatch's enthusiastic performance was well enjoyed by fans and changed the minds of critics.

Scottish actor James McAvoy made his first appearance as Professor X in Marvel's 2011 "X-Men-First Class." A performance highly praised by critics, McAvoy was reprised as Professor X for X-Men's three sequels; "Days of Future Past" (2014), "Apocalypse" (2016) and "Dark Phoenix" (2018).

Jackie Earle Haley learned of the Watchmen comic story when fans on the internet selected him to play the role of Rorschach. After researching the story, Haley auditioned for the role and was selected. Haley was praised for his performance and was considered one of the best actors in the movie which received some bad reviews.

A completely unexpected Ben Affleck played the role of Batman in DC's 2016 "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice," taking the place of previous Batman, Christian Bale. Better known as a director than actor, Affleck's casting as Batman was negatively received by fans. A hesitant Ben Affleck accepted the Batman role after Christian Bale turned it down; he retired from being Batman.

Michael Chiklis was praised for his performance despite the negative reviews earned by the film. After being introduced by a colleague to Marvel producer Avi Arad, Chiklis petitioned for the role of Benn Grim which he was cast for one year later.

Jeremy Renner is an American actor who plays Hawkeye in a series of Marvel films. This reformed criminal is a member of the Avengers, who, though lacking superpowers is a master archer and known for turning any object into a weapon.

Anna Helene Paquin is a Canadian-born actress who played Rogue in the X-Men franchise. Rogue wears gloves to protect others from her involuntary ability to absorb the strength and memories of anyone she touches and considers her powers a curse.

Ezra Mathew Miller is an American born actor and singer, who played the Flash in DC Comics', "Justice League." With super fast speed, reflexes and thinking, Flash slows down time and runs back into time, as he defies the law of physics.

Australian native, Christopher Hemsworth, plays the son of Odin and Norse God of Thunder, Thor, in Marvel's superhero films. In his newest film "Thor: Ragnarok," Hemsworth must save his beloved home world, Asgard, from his destructive sister, Hela, unleashing Ragnarok.

As one of the original members of the Justice League, 30-year-old American actor Ray Fisher plays the role of Cyborg. With a cybernetically enhanced body, Cyborg uses his abilities to honor the death of Superman by joining a team of heroes to save the planet.

Jennifer Anne Garner is an American actress who plays the role of Elektra in the films "Daredevil" (2003) and "Elektra" (2005). In her superhero role, Garner is an assassin who is employed by the Hand, a mysterious global organization, to murder whomever she is hired to kill.

This Israeli actress and model is known for her role as Wonder Woman, an unconquerable warrior, and member of the Justice League. While in character, Gal Gadot, as "Princess of the Amazons" fulfills her true destiny, defending Earth and restoring equality and peace to our planet.

Sir Ian Murray McKellen is an English actor known for playing Magneto in the X-Men films. This super villain is the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants, fighting to topple governments and achieve mutant superiority.

Christopher Eugene O'Donnell, an Illinois native, is known for his role as Robin in the "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin." As Batman's sidekick and defender, O'Donnell's character's combat strategies and gymnastic abilities are a force to be reckoned with.

Vin Diesel is a Californian actor, producer, director and screenwriter who plays Groot, the adorable tree-like creature and member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Though recognized for his deep voice, "I am Groot" is as much as you'll hear coming from the muscular actor in this role.

Jessica Alba takes on the role as Susan Storm, in Marvel's "Fantastic Four." As Marvel's first female superhero during the Silver Age of Comic, this heroine creates invisible force fields turning her and everything in her path invisible, earning the name Invisible Woman.

American comedian, writer, producer and actor, Paul Rudd, made his debut as Ant-Man in 2015. In his portrayal of this Marvel superhero, Rudd wears a super-suit which despite shrinking unleashes a powerful strength.

Wesley Snipes is an actor best known for his role as Blade, a half vampire and half human being who lives to fight the undead. In his quest to save humanity, Blade must struggle to not give in to his thirst for blood.

This Wisconsin native is known for the characters Bruce Banner and his alter ego, the Hulk, a green-skinned muscular savage who possesses immense physical strength which is born out of anger. Mark Ruffalo fights alongside Earth's greatest superheroes in Marvel's Avengers.

American actor and movie producer, Samuel Leroy Jackson, plays the role of Nick Fury in Marvel's Avengers films. Having signed a nine-film commitment to this role, we look forward to this war veteran and combat expert as the one-eyed patch director of the S.H.I.E.L.D.

Henry Cavill is a native of the British Isle of Jersey and gained international fame for his role as Superman in "Man of Steel." In this role, the Krypton native uses his superhuman capabilities to save the planet from destruction.

An inductee of the 2012 Hollywood Walk of Fame, Scarlett Johansson is famously known for her role as Black Widow in a series of Marvel Films spanning six years. This femme fatal and world-class athlete is an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, usually seen wielding her guns in her fitted black leather suit.

Christopher Robert Evans, a Massachusetts native, is known for his superhero roles, one of which he portrays is Captain America. In this role, he is armed with an unyielding shield and a costume which represents that of the American Flag.

This American actor, having won four Grammy Awards, plays the role of Deadshot in the Suicide Squad. In this DC super villain role, Will Smith plays a highly trained marksman whose bullets are not wasted as he is known to never miss.

British actor Sir Patrick Stewart is known for his role as Professor X, the most prevailing telepath in the Universe, in Marvel's X-men films. In this role, he is the creator and leader of the X-Men whose lifelong dream is for mutants and humanity to peacefully coexist.

Ronald Perlman is a Manhattan native who landed the role of Hellboy in 2004, a half-demon superhero who possess superhuman strength and healing capabilities that immunize him from diseases.

This American actress and model made her debut as Psylocke in the X-Men franchise. In this role, Olivia Munn plays a master martial artist whose fighting skills combined with her telekinetic abilities make her a powerful superheroine.

This Scottish-American actor, author, performer, and activist is known for his role as Nightcrawler in the X-Men films. Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming portrays his character, a uniquely blue-skinned superhero who possesses the ability to teleport.
