Seinfeld, starring comedian Jerry Seinfeld as himself, was sort of the original Friends. The show followed the lives and adventures of a group of friends in New York City. But, even as the actual show Friends became popular, Seinfeld continued to stay popular with viewers. The fact is that the laughs were good in the 1990s. It is notable, however, that as the '90s progressed, the themes of many of the most popular sitcoms changed from the innocence that was prevalent in earlier decades (think Andy Griffith and Happy Days) and became more cynical and raw as the century wound to a close (think Roseanne and Everybody Loves Raymond). The sitcoms of the '90s paved the way for the more "real" themes of the new millennium.
