Whether you're a sci-fi fan or not, you've probably heard a thing or two about "Star Trek." The television series debuted on NBC in 1966 and dared to boldly go where no man had gone before. The story followed the crew of the USS Enterprise as it explored new worlds and searched for new civilizations. In 1968 the show's creators decided to take viewers where no viewer had gone before by airing the first interracial kiss in television history. It caused controversy and inspiration and has lived on in history, but it's not the only thing people know about "Star Trek."
The king of Jordan once made a cameo appearance on the show, the catchphrase "Beam me up, Scotty" is famous, everybody has seen a Vulcan salute whether they know it or not, and the world is filled with Trekkies and Trekkers. There are 13 "Star Trek" films, nine TV series and more on the way. There are endless characters, and everybody has seen at least one "Star Trek" officer.

Spock was one of the most well-known Star Trek characters and first appeared in 1966. He served as the first officer aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk and is known in pop culture for his Vulcan salute.
Lieutenant Commander Data is one of the smartest and strongest members of the fleet because he's not human. He's able to compute complex calculations within seconds and is immune to disease and sickness. He isn't immune to computer viruses, however.
Captain Kathryn Janeway led the USS Voyager for Starfleet in the TV series "Star Trek: Voyager." Janeway has been ranked as one of the smartest and best captains in Star Trek history on multiple lists.

Captain Kirk excelled at the Starfleet Academy and became the best student in its history. He then became the youngest starship captain in history and one of the fleet's most important figures. William Shatner starred in the original role.
Leonard McCoy was born on Earth and was attending college in Mississippi when he decided to study medicine and leave the planet. Aside from being a doctor and surgeon, he was also known for his psychology.
B'Elanna Torres joined the Maqui Resistance after dropping out of Starfleet Academy, but she was then abandoned and ultimately joined USS Voyager. She served as the chief engineer aboard the ship under Captain Janeway.

Jean-Luc Picard is one of the most beloved characters in franchise history and the spinoff web series "Star Trek: Picard" was just released in 2020. He first appeared in 1987 and served as commander of the USS Stargazer, USS Enterprise-D and the USS Enterprise-E.
Geordie La Forge is one of the most recognizable characters in the franchise because of the visor he uses to see. He was blind since birth and the visor device scans the area and transmits visuals into La Forge's brain.
Quark first appeared in 1993 in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." He was born on the planet of Ferenginar. The Ferengi people are stereotypical capitalists who only care about money. Quark owns multiple businesses and is involved in plenty of shady practices.

Jadzia Dax was born on Trill and always wanted to be joined with a symbiont when she was older. She eventually became the eighth host for the Dax symbiont and later became the chief science officer on "Deep Space Nine."
Worf was born to Mogh parents but was orphaned and raised by humans. He lived on the farming planet Gault and on Earth before voyaging back to his home planet as a teen. He was married to Jadzia Dax before she was killed by Dukat.
Seven of Nine's real name is Annika Hansen. She was forced to join the Borg Collective but was eventually freed by the USS Voyager, where she remained under Captain Kathryn Janeway. She eventually joined the Fenris Rangers.

Miles O'Brien was born on Earth and grew up to serve multiple positions aboard Starfleet. He eventually rose to the position of chief of operations before taking an assignment on Earth to teach at Starfleet Academy.
Beverly Crusher was a Scottish-American born on the moon. She's most known for being the chief medical officer aboard the USS Enterprise-D. She was also a fellow at the Academy of Starfleet Surgeons and the leader of Starfleet Medical.
Elim Garak was one of the more mysterious characters aboard the station, but many also knew him to be one of the smartest. He was an exiled spy who decided to start a tailoring business during his exile on Deep Space Nine.

Scotty's real name is Montgomery Scott, and he was the chief engineer aboard the USS Enterprise and the USS Enterprise-A. The popular phrase, "Beam me up, Scotty," was a command from Captain Kirk when he needed to be transported back to the ship.
Nyota Uhura first appeared in 1966 and was portrayed by Nichelle Nichols for nearly 30 years. Nichols is known for being one of the first African American women to star in a major television series and said she decided to continue doing the show to serve as inspiration.
Benjamin Sisko was born on Earth in New Orleans and eventually became the commanding officer of Deep Space Nine. He achieved legendary status when he discovered the Bajoran wormhole, which was thought to have been a myth.

The unification of Earth created the United Earth (aka the World Government). The USS Enterprise NX-01 was United Earth's first starship, and Jonathan Archer served as its captain. He was also president of the United Federation of Planets.
Kira Nerys was born on the island of Bajor. She went from the Bajoran Resistance to the militia to becoming a Bajoran liaison aboard Deep Space Nine. She later became the commanding officer of the Starfleet station.
William T. Riker was born on Earth in Alaska and eventually became the lead commander of the USS Titan. He spent most of his time aboard the USS Enterprise-D and USS Enterprise-E as first officer to Jean-Luc Picard.

Julian Bashir was an only child born on planet Earth. He was one of the worst students in school, so his parents experimented with genetic engineering to make him smarter. It worked, and he became one of the smartest people in Starfleet.
Ro Laren was born on planet Bajor and eventually joined the crew aboard USS Enterprise-D. She made her first appearance in 1991 in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." She didn't get along with many on the crew.
Sarek was born on planet Vulcan but married a human when he was serving as ambassador to Earth. Sarek's second son is Spock, who's half-Vulcan and half-human. Sarek first appeared in 1967 and was also an astrophysicist.

Deanna Troi also served as counselor aboard the USS Enterprise-E under Captain Picard. She eventually rose up the ranks to the title of commander, but her special power was the ability to sense emotion. She is best remembered as the ship's counselor.
Commander T'Pol was a member of the Vulcan High Command who resigned her position so she could stay aboard the Enterprise. She was known as a rebel and was sometimes at odds with other members of the crew.
Hikaru Sulu first appeared in 1966 and was portrayed by George Takei for 30 years. Sulu was born on Earth in San Francisco and began his service under Captain Kirk. He later served on the USS Enterprise-A and the USS Excelsior.

Katherine Pulaski was one of the best doctors in franchise history and served as chief medical officer aboard the USS Enterprise-D. She once performed heart surgery and saved Captain Picard's life, even though he initially didn't want her to.
Tuvok was born on Vulcan's lunar colony, although the planet Vulcan has no moon. Tuvok served aboard the USS Excelsior under Captain Hikaru Sulu and on the USS Voyager under Captain Kathryn Janeway. He also served on the USS Wyoming.
Rachel Garret began as an officer but rose the ranks to captain of the USS Enterprise-C. She served under Captain Picard. She met her fate by a piece of shrapnel after a Klingon Bird-of-Prey attacked the Enterprise-C.

Tom Paris was the son of Owen Paris and husband to B'Ellana Torres. He began his service aboard the USS Exeter but was discharged after causing a deadly pilot error. He eventually found himself leading flight operations on the USS Voyager under Captain Janeway.
Lieutenant Ilia appeared in the first installment of the "Star Trek" film franchise, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." She was born on planet Delta IV and ultimately became a navigator aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk.
Chakotay first appeared in 1995 and was the first Native American character in the "Star Trek" franchise. He served as first officer under Captain Janeway aboard the USS Voyager. He was a member of the Maquis Resistance before joining the Voyager.

Lieutenant Natasha Yar more commonly went by Tasha, and she was a security chief on the USS Enterprise-D. Yar was killed off pretty quickly in the series, but she was written back into the show and appeared in an alternate timeline.
Harry Kim served as operations manager on the bridge of the USS Voyager. He was the most junior bridge officer in the crew and was nervous when he first began his mission. He served under Captain Kathryn Janeway.
Janice Rand first appeared in 1966 in an episode called "The Man Trap." She served aboard the USS Enterprise for its entirety and was officially a personal assistant to Captain Kirk. She later became romantically involved with Captain Kirk.

Pavel Chekov served senior roles aboard the USS Enterprise and USS Enterprise-A. He also served as executive officer aboard the USS Reliant. His first mission after graduating Starfleet Academy was a five-year mission aboard USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk.
Whoopi Goldberg shaved her eyebrows a long time ago and continued to do so after they grew back and irritated her. Goldberg portrayed Guinan in the "Star Trek" franchise and first appeared in 1988. She is rumored to reprise her role in 2020 for the web series, "Star Trek: Picard."
Charles Tucker III was more commonly known as Trip Tucker. He served under Captain Archer aboard Enterprise NX-01. Tucker grew up on Earth in Florida. He met Jonathan Archer as soon as he joined Starfleet and the two became good friends.

Amanda Grayson was born on Earth and fell in love with Sarek when he was the Vulcan ambassador to Earth. The two were the parents of the half-Vulcan, half-human Spock, and later argued whether they should raise him in an Earthling or Vulcan way.
