The classic adventures of the optically challenged Mister Magoo opened with a cheery tune that played while the titular character drove his car over a train, through a barn, into a mud pit, into a fire hydrant, onto a crane hook, down a roller coaster track and onto electric wires before arriving at the title card. Mister Magoo was voiced by Jim Backus, better known for playing Thurston Howell III on Gilligan's Island.

Popeye is one of the oldest cartoon characters in history. Adapted from a newspaper comic in 1933, Paramount ran Popeye theatrical shorts until the spinach-loving sailor jumped to TV in 1956.

While most fans remember the family pet Dino the dinosaur who served as the Flintstones' dog, "the modern Stone Age family" had another pet. Fred was constantly at odds with Baby Puss, the pet saber-tooth tiger, who repeatedly threw him out of the house each night, causing Fred to pound on the door and shout for Wilma, much to the annoyance of the neighbors he woke.

Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby have been driving around in the Mystery Machine since Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! premiered in 1969. The super catchy theme song set up the adventures of the cowardly Scooby and ended with Shaggy (RIP Casey Kasem) asking "Scooby Doo, where are you" and Scooby answering "right here!"

Poor, hapless, dimwitted George of the Jungle was created as a parody of Tarzan in 1967. The less-than-smart hero thought his elephant Shep was a dog, or as George calls him, a "great big peanut-lovin' poochie". A running gag on the show was that George also often forgot that he lived in a treehouse, resulting in him falling to the ground, and of course, all fans remember his inability to swing from the vines without tree-related catastrophes.

Jane Jetson is the only one in the song to have her family role said after her name. George's role as husband and father is never specified, and the children are introduced roles-first as "his boy Elroy" and "daughter Judy". Jane is then introduced as "Jane, his wife".

From 1964 to 1973, NBC (with sponsorship from General Mills) brought us the adventures of Underdog and his mild-mannered alter ego Shoeshine Boy. The shows typically featured two segments of Underdog, one of Tennessee Tuxedo and one of Commander McBragg. The Go-Go-Gophers, Klondike Kat and The Sing-a-Long Family also had recurring segments.

Speed Racer, called Mach GoGoGo in its native Japan, chronicled the adventures of Speed Racer, his girlfriend Trixie, his older brother Racer X (Rex), his younger brother Spritle, and Spritle's pet chimp, Chim-Chim. In the American version, the main character is named Speed Racer, but in the original Japanese, his name is Go Mifune, as a tribute to beloved Japanese movie star Toshiro Mifune.

Magilla Gorilla told the story of Magilla, a kind-hearted gorilla, and Mr. Peebles, the pet shop owner who is desperate to sell him. Some sources say that Magilla's name comes from the Yiddish word megillah, meaning a long tedious telling of a story. Supporting this theory is the fact that in one episode, Magilla remarks "Such a megillah over a gorilla."

The Groovie Goolies ran for one season and is a prime example of spin-off wormholes. The GGs was a spin-off of The Sabrina the Teenage Witch Show, which was itself a spinoff of The Archie Show. It's important to get the spelling right on Goolies, however, because the Groovy GHOULIES was a pop-punk band from California whose songs were based on horror films.

The Archie Show was the first cartoon to be based on the 1941 comics and aired in 1968. It was also the first of the Saturday Morning Cartoons to use a laugh track.

The hapless but lovable Hong Kong Phooey and his alter ego of "mild-mannered" janitor Penrod "Penry" Pooch were both voiced by Scatman Crothers, six years before he would portray Dick Hallorann in The Shining. Hong Kong Phooey was a "hero" akin to Klondike Kat and Inspector Gadget, in that the sidekick (in this case Spot the cat) does all the work but the hero thinks they were successful on their own.

Josie and the Pussycats began in 1970 as a spin-off of The Archie Show. The character of Valerie (whose speaking was done by Barbara Pariot and whose singing was done by Patrice Holloway) made history as the first African-American female character to appear on a regular Saturday morning cartoon.

Count Duckula was originally conceived as a spin-off for DangerMouse, on which Count Duckula was a recurring villain. The premise of the show is that Count Duckula could be resurrected once a century in a ceremony using blood, but this time, the servants accidentally used ketchup instead and created a vegetarian Duckula who only wanted to eat carrots and become famous. He was voiced by David Jason, best known as Del Boy Trotter on Only Fools and Horses.

Written as a parody of James Bond and the Danger Man series, Danger Mouse was a somewhat unexpected hit with children too young to understand the joke. Nevertheless, the adventures of the White Wonder and his hamster sidekick Penfold have delighted generations. And yes, despite often being confused with a mole, it is canon that Penfold is a hamster, according to show creator Brian Cosgrove.

Garfield and Friends premiered in 1988 and for seven seasons told the stories of Garfield, Odie, Pookie, and Jon, as well as a farmyard animal segment called U.S. Acres. Creator Jim Davis had wanted to create a cartoon based solely on his U.S. Acres comic strip, but CBS insisted that the more well-known Garfield be the star. A compromise was reached and the Acres gang became the "friends" in "Garfield and Friends".

Chuck Lorre, creator of shows like Two and A Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, wrote the lyrics to this theme song, and that writing credit was the first major television credit of his career. As such, he's found a way to work it into the scripts of most of his other shows, such as Charlie Harper telling his nephew that the TMNT song was the first song he ever wrote, or Sheldon singing it with the other nerds chiming in with "turtle power"!

ThunderCats tells the tale of Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra, WilyKit and WilyKat, and Snarf as they fight to defend Third Earth and prevent the Eye of Thundera from falling into the hands of the Mutants of Plun-Darr. Snarf's real name was Osbert, which he hated.

The enduring theme song was written by Michael and Patty Silversher and was performed by Joseph Williams. Movie fans might know Joseph as the son of famed screen composer John Williams, and '80s rock fans might know him as one of the lead singers of the band Toto (during their Fahrenheit and The Seventh One phase).

What is traditionally referred to as Generation 1 Transformers premiered in 1984 and included the line "more than meets the eye". While most cartoons are known for their toy-based merchandising, Transformers is unique in that the toy came before the show.

The Muppet Babies carried on the Henson tradition of including references to entertain the adults who were watching with their children and had episodes where the Muppet Babies went on adventures very similar to those in Indiana Jones, The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, and Ghostbusters.

The Smurfs ran on American television from 1981 to 1989. It was based on a Belgian cartoon known as Les Schtroumpfs in French and De Smurfen in Dutch (both of which translate to The Smurfs). Let's hope the show made more sense in other languages.

The first tv iteration of Peter Parker and his alter ego hit the small screen in 1967 and ended in 1970. Since then, there have been nine Spider-Man cartoon shows: Spider-Man (1981-1982), Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981-1983), Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998), Spider-Man Unlimited (1991-2001), Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (2003), The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-2009), Ultimate Spider-Man (2012-2017) and Marvel's Spider-Man (2017-current).

The Rescue Rangers live in a tree inside a major park inside a major city that is never specified. However, since The Chrysler Building and the Twin Towers appear in some episodes, most fans assume the city is New York and the Rangers live in Central Park. And for those who have trouble telling them apart, Chip has a black nose and Dale has a red nose.

The show begins with Donald Duck enlisting in the Navy and leaving his nephews in the custody of his uncle Scrooge McDuck. It's never really explained how Donald got custody of Huey, Louie and Dewey in the first place, however. The show was rebooted in 2017.

Believe it or not, SpongeBob and the gang have been a part of the cultural mainstream for nearly 20 years. The show premiered on July 17, 1999. While it might be easy to write it off as mind-rot and just plain kind of weird (why would a squirrel live underwater?), the show has won six Annie Awards, two British Academy Children's Awards, two Daytime Emmy Awards, eight Golden Reel Awards, 14 Kids' Choice Awards, and has ranked in several internet lists of the greatest cartoons of all time.

Despite offending almost every demographic at one point or another, South Park became a cultural phenomenon and won five Primetime Emmy Awards, an AFI Award, an Annie Award and a Peabody.

Animaniacs was famous for parodying Hollywood legends with their characters. Dot was based, in part, on Gilda Radner. Yakko was an homage to Groucho Marx. Runt from the Rita & Runt segments was a nod to Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man, Brain's speech patterns were meant to mimic those of Orson Welles, and of course, The Goodfeathers were a tribute to Goodfellas.

Pinky and his best friend Brain were lab mice whose genes were spliced using the "Acme Gene Splicer, Bagel Warmer, and Hot Dog Steamer." There is a popular fan theory that the lyrics are deliberately misleading; Brain is clearly insane as evidenced by his plan to take over the world and Pinky is the genius who finds subtle ways to prevent this.

Captain Planet, Gaia, and the Planeteers inspired a generation to work together to save the Earth. Each Planeteer came from a different continent (with Australia conspicuously not making the cut and no one from Antarctica for obvious reasons) to subtly convey the message that saving the planet was a global effort.

Tiny Toon Adventures told the tale of the younger inhabitants of the town of Acme Acres as they attend Acme Looniversity to learn how to be funny in classes taught by Looney Tunes classic characters. The show was made by the same team who made the Animaniacs, and after two seasons, the show was canceled in order to let the team focus on the more popular (and arguably more funny) Animaniacs.

Pokemon is short for Pocket Monsters (Poketto Monsutā in Japanese). The show is largely credited with making anime and manga popular with Western audiences. The top two highest grossing anime films in US history have both been Pokemon movies.

Series creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh (who happen to voice Major Monogram and Dr. Doofenshmirtz) spent 16 years trying to get a network to pick up this awesome cartoon. Disney finally took a chance on them in 2007, and the show found an audience with children and adults alike. At the time of its finale in 2015, it was the longest-running Disney Channel Original Series in the network's history.
