The first fast food restaurant to hit the market was White Castle, even though many believe it was McDonald's. White Castle first appeared in 1921 and was followed by McDonald's in 1940 and KFC in 1952. These were the days of drive-ins where workers would skate their way to your car to deliver your food. You would enjoy it from the comfort of your driver's seat and be on your way. It was truly an experience. 

By the time 1970 hit, Americans were spending $6 billion on fast food. It is projected that by 2020, that number will go up to $223 billion. That's a lot of fast food! It makes sense, though, as there are more than 300,000 fast food joints in the United States alone. So how do people choose which places to go to? One word: marketing.
